On August 5th, 1962, Mandela was captured by police. He was charged with inciting worker's strikes and leaving the country without permission. While being jailed before his trial, he began to study for a Bachelor of Laws (LLB) degree. On October 15, he was found guilty and sentenced to five years in prison. After a police raid of the property Mandela was staying at, they uncovered documents detailing Mandela's anti-apartheid activities, and was charged with four counts of sabotage and conspiracy to violently overthrow the government. He was found guilty and was sentenced to life in prison. There, he took part in a group aimed to improve living, food, and work conditions. Following numerous debates and peace talks bouncing the idea back and forth of Mandela being free, he was finally released from prison on February 11, 1990, nearly 30 years later.
